Abstract
THIS VOLUME CONVEYS IMPORTANT ASPECTS OF THE LAW IN PLAIN LANGUAGE. THE AUTHOR, A LONDON SOLICITOR WHOSE WORK BRINGS HIM INTO REGULAR CONTACT WITH THE POLICE, TRACES THE DEVELOPMENT OF BRITAIN'S POLICE FORCE FROM THE EARLY DAYS WHEN THERE WAS FIERCE OPPOSITION TO ANY PROPOSALS FOR A FULL-TIME POLICE FORCE. HE COVERS IN DETAIL THE MANY INSTANCES IN WHICH PUBLIC AND POLICE CAN COME INTO CONTACT, AND EXPLAINS PRECISELY WHAT THE RIGHTS OF THE PUBLIC ARE. HE EXAMINES THE REASONS WHY SOME PEOPLE BELIEVE THAT RELATIONS BETWEEN POLICE AND PUBLIC ARE WORSENING. HE STRESSES THE DANGERS OF ALLOWING THIS TO HAPPEN AND HIGHLIGHTS A NUMBER OF AREAS IN WHICH THE LAW COULD BE USEFULLY CLARIFIED. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT)
