THE SECOND IN A SERIES OF ANNUAL ANTHOLOGIES, THIS VOLUME PRESENTS 35 ARTICLES ON THE POLICE ROLE, PROBLEMS IN POLICING, POLICE METHODS, AND POLICE IN RELATION TO SOCIETY.
Abstract
THIS VOLUME IS DIVIDED INTO FIVE SECTIONS. IN THE FIRST SECTION, 'THE POLICE: SOCIO-POLITICAL PERSPECTIVES', SEVERAL ATTITUDES TOWARDS THE POLICE ARE PRESENTED FROM COMPARATIVE AND HISTORICAL VIEWPOINTS. ESPECIALLY EMPHASIZED ARE THE REACTIONS OF POLICE FORCES TO CHANGES IN SOCIETY. THE SECOND SECTION INCLUDES A SERIES OF ARTICLES WHICH EXAMINE POLICE WORK AS IT AFFECTS CRIME IN THE COMMUNITY. POLICE-COMMUNITY RELATIONS, OFFENDERS, VICTIMS, AND THE LAW ENFORCEMENT ROLE ARE CONSIDERED. THE BEHAVIOR AND ATTITUDES OF THE POLICE OFFICER ARE EXAMINED IN THE THIRD SECTION, WITH AN EMPHASIS ON THE PSYCHOLOGICAL AND SOCIOLOGICAL ASPECTS OF POLICING. THE IMPACT OF VARIOUS POLICE APPROACHES AND METHODS AND THE PROBLEM OF CORRUPTION IN LAW ENFORCEMENT ARE DESCRIBED IN SECTION IV. IN THE FINAL SECTION SEVERAL AUTHORS CONTEMPLATE THE FUTURE OF LAW ENFORCEMENT. LIKE THE FIRST VOLUME, THIS BOOK IS PUBLISHED FOR STUDENTS OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE, FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT ADMINISTRATORS AND PRACTITIONERS, AND FOR CONCERNED CITIZENS AS A CATALYST FOR INQUIRY AND ANALYSIS.
