POLICE AND PROSECUTION, POLICE AND COURTS, PROCEDURAL GOALS, POLICE AND OTHER AGENCIES, AND QUESTIONS FOR RESEARCH WERE THE TOPICS CONSIDERED IN THIS WORKSHOP.
Abstract
UNDER THE TOPIC OF 'POLICE AND PROSECUTION,' THE SUBITEMS DISCUSSED INCLUDED THE COMPLEMENTARY ASPECTS OF THE WORK OF THE POLICE AND THAT OF THE PROSECUTOR, THEIR INTERACTION AND THE IMPACT IT MIGHT HAVE ON THEIR RESPECTIVE GOALS AND ATTITUDES TOWARD OFFENSES AND OFFENDERS, AND THE DIFFERENT FACTORS WHICH INFLUENCE DECISIONMAKING AT THIS LEVEL OF THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE PROCESS. IN THE AREA OF POLICE AND COURTS, THE STATE-OF-THE ART IN RESEARCH AND FUTURE RESEARCH NEEDS WERE CONSIDERED IN THE FOLLOWING TOPICS: THE INVESTIGATIVE FUNCTION FOR THE POLICE, POLICE AS A SOURCE OF COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE COURTS, POLICE AS WITNESSES, POLICE EXECUTING COURT DECISIONS, AND POSSIBLE FEEDBACK BY THE COURT TO POLICE. IN CONSIDERING 'POLICE TRAINING,' THERE WAS AN APPARENTLY STRONG FEELING AMONG WORKSHOP MEMBERS THAT TRAINING IS DEFICIENT IN EQUIPPING POLICE TO DEAL EFFECTIVELY WITH PEOPLE AS A PART OF THEIR ROLE IN SERVING THE PUBLIC. THE NATURE OF POLICE DIVERSION IN VARIOUS COUNTRIES WAS CONSIDERED, AS WAS POLICE AND COURTS COMMUNICATIONS. IT WAS INDICATED THAT THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE POLICE AND OTHER AGENCIES AND GROUPS WITHIN THE COMMUNITY MUST BE BASED UPON CLEARLY DEFINED GOALS AND OBJECTIVES IN COOPERATIVE WORK AND DECISIONMAKING. SPECIFIC AREAS FOR RESEARCH IN POLICE AND PRIVATE SECURITY PERTAINED TO THE RELATIONSHIP AND THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN POLICE AND PRIVATE SECURITY PERSONNEL. RESEARCH TOPICS ARE DISCUSSED. (RCB)
