Individual papers examine trends regarding women in policing, the relevance of college education to police selection, the role of psychological testing, and the training and discipline of police officers. Further papers consider effects of different types of police patrol, measurements of police effectiveness, the nature of problem-oriented policing, the results of experiments in community-oriented policing, and a project designed to apprehend and convict career criminals. Other articles discuss police corruption, the role of citizen action groups like the Guardian Angels, the factors justifying active police unions, police accreditation, the effects of computerization on police agencies, and the successes and failures of police reform efforts in the past 25 years.
