Abstract
PAPERS ON THE HISTORY OF POLICE ORGANIZATION IN SCANDINAVIA CONSIDER THE MOVEMENT TOWARD POLICE CENTRALIZATION IN COUNTRIES WITH LONG TRADITIONS OF SELF-GOVERNING MUNICIPAL POLICING. ATTENTION IS GIVEN TO THE EVOLUTION OF THE POLICE IN SCANDINAVIAN COUNTRIES DURING INDUSTRIALIZATION, WITH STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN, SERVING AS AN EXAMPLE. PAPERS ON PUBLIC ORDER AND THE POLICE CONSIDER THE EFFECTS ON PUBLIC ORDER OF A POLICE STRIKE IN FINLAND AND THE SOCIAL DISORGANIZATION BROUGHT ABOUT BY THE CONCENTRATION OF DRUG-ABUSING GROUPS IN CERTAIN AREAS OF STOCKHOLM. IN CONSIDERING MOBILIZATION OF THE POLICE AND DISCRETIONARY JUSTICE, AND PATROL-INITIATED POLICE RESPONSE ARE COMPARED IN A NORWEGIAN STUDY, AND PRIVATE COMPLAINTS AND POLICE BEHAVIOR ARE EXAMINED IN A GERMAN STUDY. PRIVATE POLICE IN SWEDEN AND THE IMPACT OF POLICE-LED ACTIVITIES IN SWEDISH SCHOOL ARE CONSIDERED. EVALUATIVE RESEARCH IS REVIEWED IN AN ANALYSIS OF POLICE-LED RECREATION ACTIVITIES FOR YOUTH, A THEORETICAL ANALYSIS OF POLICE PROVISION OF CRIME PREVENTION INFORMATION FOR THE PUBLIC, AND AN OVERVIEW ASSESSMENT OF OPERATION IDENTIFICATION IN THE UNITED STATES. POLICE RESEARCH PROBLEMS AND METHODOLOGY ARE EXAMINED IN PAPERS DEALING WITH POLICE RESEARCH WITH IN POLICE AGENCIES, THE WORK OF THE POLICE FOUNDATION IN THE UNITED STATES, AND SYSTEMATIC SOCIAL OBSERVATION AS A TOOL FOR POLICE RESEARCH.
