ANALYSIS OF INSTANCES IN WHICH CIVILIANS WERE KILLED BY POLICE IN 1969-70, AND AN ATTEMPT TO DISCERN PATTERNS IN POLICE CONDUCT TOWARD CITIZENS FROM THESE FATAL ATTACKS.
Abstract
THE STUDY EXAMINES HOW FREQUENTLY POLICE KILLINGS IN CHICAGO OCCURRED IN COMPARISON TO POLICE KILLINGS OF CIVILIANS IN OTHER MAJOR CITIES. IN ADDITION, IT ANALYZES SPECIFIC SEGMENTS OF THE TOTAL POPULATION IN CHICAGO IN ORDER TO SEE WHICH GROUPS WERE MOST OFTEN THE OBJECTS OF POLICE FATAL FORCE. THE STUDY THEN EXAMINES THE EVIDENCE AVAILABLE ON THE CIRCUMSTANCES OF EACH FATALITY. IT OUTLINES THE SYSTEM OF REVIEW AND CATALOGUES THE DISPOSITIONS MADE IN THE 79 CASES STUDIED. NEWSPAPER CLIPPINGS WHICH CHRONICLE THE EVENTS ARE INCLUDED.
