Abstract
The volume's basic content was tested during an assessment center training class taught by the author to police and fire department personnel at Pioneer Community College in Kansas City. An overview discusses the history and rationale of the use of assessment centers. Methods for forming a proper attitude and preparing to take part in an assessment center are also explained. A description of measurement techniques identifies the 30 dimensions most commonly used to measure candidates. Detailed guidelines are also given for handling each of the five exercises used in testing: in-basket, group process, oral presentation, counseling session, and written presentation. Step-by-step samples of work simulation activities and behavioral expectations are given for each exercise. The variations and methods used in these exercises are also detailed from the perspective of the skill areas that are the most measurable and observable in each exercise.
