Abstract
Assessment centers are considered to be the most accurate testing procedure available and the best method in determining who is better-suited for a position or advancement. An assessment center is a methodology of providing the means that a law enforcement entity can use to identify the potential performance behaviors of candidates in a related job or task. The assessment center is defined as a testing process containing basic measures of action founded on many factors and that knowledgeable assessors should use these measures to gauge the candidates' performances. The basic use of the assessment center process initially began in the United States in the military during World War II. The assessment center process today is used in conjunction with question-and-answer testing. This edition on police assessment testing is identified as a handbook for all law enforcement personnel on the assessment process. It represents a significant updating of many of the chapters from the previous edition, divided into 12 chapters. The chapter areas include: an introduction to assessment center testing, police promotion testing, written examinations in a promotional process, proper attitude and approach, traditional skill areas assessed, developing performance strategies, principles of handling an in-basket, effective performance in group exercises, effectiveness in an oral presentation exercise, effective handling of a counseling simulation exchange, effectively documenting a problem analysis exercise, and various individual, group, written and oral exercises.
