SHORTAGE OF PETROLEUM FUEL SUPPLIES, COUPLED WITH THE INCREASES IN THE PRICE OF GASOLINE, PROVIDE EMPHASIS TO THE NEED FOR IMPROVING POLICE CAR FUEL ECONOMY.
Abstract
THIS DOCUMENT PROVIDES INFORMATION ON THE FACTORS AFFECTING FUEL CONSUMPTION BY AUTOMOBILES AND THE MEASURES WHICH MAY BE TAKEN TO REDUCE THE FUEL CONSUMPTION OF POLICE CARS. THE SUMMARY INFORMATION PROVIDED IN REGARD TO CAR SIZE, VEHICLE CONFIGURATION, OPERATION (INCLUDING DRIVER TECHNIQUES) AND MAINTENANCE SHOWS THAT POTENTIAL FUEL ECONOMY BENEFITS ARE SUBSTANTIAL. RECOMMENDATIONS ARE INCLUDED TO ASSIST LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICIALS IN DETERMINING WHICH FUEL ECONOMY MEASURES ARE MOST APPLICABLE TO THEIR PARTICULAR JURISDICTIONS. IN ADDITION, THE ELEMENTS OF A FUEL CONSERVATION PROGRAM ARE IDENTIFIED AND DESCRIBED, INCLUDING EXAMPLES OF DRIVER TRAINING MATERIALS. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT)
