Eight feature articles address various ways to improve officer safety.
Abstract
"National Peace Officers Memorial Day" reviews the history of this day (May 15th) and ways in which communities across the Nation have observed this day, which honors Federal, State, and municipal police officers who have been killed or disabled in the line of duty. "Research, Policy, and Training Improve Officer Safety" reviews efforts of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) to improve officer safety. "When Officers Die: Understanding Deadly Domestic Violence Calls for Service" reviews the circumstances under which officers have been killed while responding to domestic violence calls and suggests policies that can improve officer safety in such cases. "Officer Safety: A Multidimensional Challenge" reviews the importance and features of police body armor, as well as policies and IACP initiatives regarding body armor. "Promoting Officer Safety: A Priority Focus of the U.S. Department of Justice "describes the U.S. Justice Department's national law enforcement officer safety training and technical assistance program called Preventing Violence Against Law Enforcement and Ensuring Officer Resilience and Survivability (VALOR). "The IACP and the Bureau of Justice Assistance Create the National Center for the Prevention of Violence Against the Police" reviews the creation and mission of the National Center for the Prevention of Violence Against the Police. "Stopping IEDs: DHS Tools and Resources for Law Enforcement" reviews the various tools and resources that the Federal Department of Homeland Security has developed for law enforcement agencies in addressing the threat of improvised explosive devices. "Responder Knowledge Base: An Agency's First Response" describes an online one-stop source of timely law enforcement information that is designed to assist with the daily decisions police administrators must make. Four regular "columns" are presented in this issue, along with information from various "Departments" of the magazine.
