Abstract
This October 2013 edition of Police Chief Magazine contains seven main articles dealing with community-oriented policing. The first article, Collaborative Partnerships to Solve Community Issues, reports on the use of community action agencies to improve police-community relations in low-income areas. The second article, Inviting the Community into the Police Strategic Planning Process, describes how this strategy improved police legitimacy in Greenville, NC. The third article, Lifesaving Leadership to Break the Cycle of Family Violence: Partnerships between Law Enforcement and Communities, describes how family justice centers offer law enforcement executives an opportunity to be public safety leaders and break the cycle of family violence. The fourth article, Countering Violent Extremism: A Community Partnership Approach describes the successful implementation of a CVE (countering violent extremism) strategy in Hennepin County, MN. The fifth article, Community Capacity Building and Partnerships in Action, describes the benefits that can result from implementation of community capacity building in local police and sheriff's departments. The sixth article, Oak Creek: Leading a Community in the Aftermath of a Tragedy, describes law enforcement's efforts to be proactive in the community following the shooting at the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin in Oak Creek, WI. The seventh article, In an Era of Austerity: Chief-to-Chief Lessons on the Consolidation of Law Enforcement Services describes ideas for law enforcement executives to use when developing budget and consolidation plans. This edition of the magazine also has a section on the 120th Annual IACP (International Association of Chiefs of Police) Conference held in Philadelphia, PA, from October 19-23, 2013. Additional columns in this issue deal with legislative updates, new technologies, and current research.
