Five of the feature articles address counter-terrorism issues in law enforcement work, and four chapters address facial recognition technology mobile computers, unmanned aircraft systems, and combating financial fraud and identity theft.
Abstract
"Terrorism and the Technology Gap" identifies and describes various technologies that were or could have been useful in the investigation of the Boston marathon bombings. "Talking Points: Delivering the Message to Terrorists - The Boston Way" outlines four lessons from the Boston attacks: Not all acts of violence can be prevented; the community is an indispensable asset; quickly restore normalcy; and highlight resiliency. "Fighting Terrorism: International Models for Law Enforcement" presents examples of approaches to dealing with terrorism in various democratic countries. "Developing Policy on Using Social Media for Intelligence and Investigations" presents the Georgia Bureau of Investigation's social media policy for investigations and intelligence collection. "Violent Domestic Extremism and the Role of Social Media within Law Enforcement" argues that law enforcement must monitor criminally subversive groups' use of social media to deliver their subversive messages. "A Practical Application: Facial Recognition Technology" profiles the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles' implementation of cutting-edge facial recognition technology. "Product Feature: Mobile Computers" discusses how more advanced and portable devices and more sophisticated technologies on both the front and back ends are transforming mobile computers into a digital extension of the police station or substation. "Unmanned Aircraft Systems: All the Boxes Checked, but Challenges Remain" discusses how unmanned aircraft systems can assist law enforcement agencies in saving time, money, and lives. "Combating Financial Fraud and ID Theft through Regional Partnerships" explains the problem of financial fraud and identify theft in western Washington State and describes the formation of a regional public-private partnership to combat such crime. Various columns are also provided in this issue.
