AN EXAMINATION OF THE POLICE AND THE POLICE ROLE IN RELATION TO ISSUES AND PROBLEMS OF THE URBAN ENVIRONMENT, INCLUDING POPULATION PATTERNS, URBAN DEVELOPMENT, AND URBAN COMMERCE.
Abstract
THE POLICE ARE AT THE SAME TIME AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE URBAN ENVIRONMENT AND A REFLECTION OF THE ENVIRONMENT IN WHICH THEY OPERATE. IN ORDER TO ASSESS THE ISSUES AND PROBLEMS IN POLICE-COMMUNITY RELATIONS, THIS TEXT CAREFULLY EXAMINES THE WORKING CONTEXT OF POLICE - THE URBAN ENVIRONMENT. IN ADDITION TO THE AUTHOR'S OWN COMMENTS AND OBSERVATIONS, THE TEXT INCLUDES A SERIES OF REPRINTS OF WELL-KNOWN ARTICLES AND REPORTS APPENDED TO EACH CHAPTER WHICH COMPLEMENT AND ELABORATE ON THE ISSUES PRESENTED IN THE TEXT. THE AUTHOR OPENS WITH A REVIEW OF THE HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE POLICE, AND INVESTIGATES THE LAW ENFORCEMENT, PUBLIC SERVICE, AND SYMBOLIC ROLES OF THE URBAN POLICE. SEVERAL ASPECTS OF THE URBAN ENVIRONMENT ARE THEN EXAMINED IN RELATION TO THE POLICE, INCLUDING SOCIAL CLASSES, STATUS, URBAN POPULATION FACTORS, METROPOLITAN GROWTH PATTERNS, RESIDENTIAL AREA TYPES, COMMERCIAL DISTRICTS, TRANSPORTATION, THE MASS MEDIA, AND ALIENATION IN THE CITIES. POLICE CORRUPTION, POLICE REFORM, AND CURRENT POLICE PROBLEMS ARE ALSO DISCUSSED. (SNI ABSTRACT)
