SOME MAJOR PROBLEMS IN THE DEVELOPMENT AND IMPLEMENTATION OF EFFECTIVE POLICE-COMMUNITY RELATIONS PROGRAMS ARE IDENTIFIED.
Abstract
THEY INCLUDE LACK OF SUPPORT FROM THE CHIEF OF POLICE, FAILURE TO INVOLVE ALL MEN IN A POLICE DEPARTMENT, LACK OF ADEQUATE TAILORING OF POLICE COMMUNITY RELATIONS PROGRAMS TO MEET COMMUNITY NEEDS, FAILURE TO REACH PEOPLE WHO NEED MOST TO BE REACHED, AND THE EXPENSE OF SUCH PROJECTS. OTHER PITFALLS INCLUDE THE USE OF COMMUNITY RELATIONS UNITS AS INTELLIGENCE UNITS, PUBLIC RELATIONS UNITS, AND INTERNAL INVESTIGATION UNITS, AND THE OVER-RELIANCE ON GROUP INTERACTION SEMINARS.
