This compilation of materials summarizes police-community relations programs that are illustrative of the range and effectiveness of efforts being pursued in the field.
Abstract
Many of the programs described have been wholly supported by local initiative and funding. All have been undertaken to establish a good working relationship between the police and the citizens to enlist the latter's support in maintaining law and order. The programs reflect the effort to establish a meaningful communication with the community through businesses, the press, public agencies, and various citizen groups. The communities with representative programs include St. Louis, Mo.; Tampa, Fla; Prince George's County, Md.; Philadelphia; and San Francisco. Emphasis in much of the material presented from each location is on some large public event and attendant disturbances which taxed the maintenance of good relations among the people and the police. Illustrations are provided with some materials. The collection is appended by some correspondence and the agenda and participants of the Conference For Police Administrators on Community Tensions and Civil Disturbances.
