Abstract
THE FIRST SECTION WHICH IS ORGANIZED AS AN INTRODUCTION TO AND DEFINITION OF POLICE-COMMUNITY RELATIONS PRESENTS ARTICLES DEALING WITH THE OBJECTIVES AND FUNCTIONS OF THE POLICE, INCREASING CITIZEN PARTICIPATION AND POWER IN GOVERNMENT, AND AN OVERVIEW OF THE TYPES OF POLICE-COMMUNITY RELATIONS PROGRAMS AND PROJECTS CURRENTLY PROVEN VALID OR BEING TESTED. SECTION TWO IDENTIFIES MANY OF THE PROBLEMS PLAGUING THE POLICE IN IMPROVING POLICE-COMMUNITY RELATIONS AND OFFERS SOME SOLUTIONS TO THESE DIFFICULTIES. ARTICLES IN THIS SECTION INCLUDE A MAJOR PORTION FROM THE 1967 TASK FORCE REPORT ON THE POLICE AND A DISCUSSION OF THE INTERACTION OF POLICE AND GHETTO RESIDENTS. PART THREE DISCUSSES A NUMBER OF APPROACHES TO IMPROVING POLICE-COMMUNITY RELATIONS. THIS SECTION INCLUDES A PROPOSAL OF STEPS FOR MOUNTING A POLICE-COMMUNITY RELATIONS PROGRAM, SURVEY INFORMATION ON THE LEVEL OF PCR TRAINING EFFORTS THROUGHOUT THE NATION, THE IMPACT OF THE SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICER OR POLICE OFFICER ON CAMPUS. THE FINAL SECTION DEALS WITH TOPICS SUCH AS THE CURRENT STATUS OF THE POLICE AND POLICE-COMMUNITY RELATIONS AND AN ANALYSIS OF THE POLICE-CITIZEN ROLE. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)
