Abstract
IN FACT, APPROXIMATELY 80 PERCENT OF THE TIME THE AVERAGE PATROL OFFICER IS INVOLVED IN SERVICE CALLS REQUIRING PRIMARILY SOCIAL REGULATION, ORDER MAINTENANCE, AND/OR CRISIS INTERVENTION. THIS BOOK BEGINS WITH A FOUR-STEP ACTION PLAN APPLICABLE TO ANY CRISIS CALL. TO MAKE THIS ADVICE EVEN MORE SPECIFIC, DETAILED TREATMENTS OF FIVE COMMON TYPES OF CRISES ARE THEN GIVEN. CONSIDERED ARE FAMILY DISPUTES, MENTAL DISTURBANCE, DRUG AND ALCOHOL INTOXICATION, RAPE, AND SUICIDE - WHAT CAUSES THEM, HOW PEOPLE TEND TO REACT TO THEM, AND HOW THE NATURE OF EACH IS LIKELY TO AFFECT THE SUCCESS OR FAILURE OF EFFORTS TO RESOLVE IT. THE LAST TWO CHAPTERS, WRITTEN FOR THE POLICE TRAINER, OUTLINE A PROCESS CALLED 'STRUCTURED LEARNING TRAINING,' A TRAINING APPROACH PROVEN EFFECTIVE IN PRESENTING CRISIS INTERVENTION SKILLS TO PATROL OFFICERS. TRAINERS ARE GIVEN DETAILED EXAMPLES OF EXERCISES KEYED TO THE INTERVENTION PROCEDURES. APPENDED MATERIALS INCLUDE A SAMPLE FAMILY CRISIS INTERVENTION REPORT AND A LIST OF SUGGESTED READINGS.
