A survey of 100 police department representatives of all 50 states gathered information about police personnel, calls for service, budgets, and the characteristics of the typical police officer.
Abstract
The analysis showed that the highest crime and arrest rates were not necessarily associated with larger budgets per resident. The typical police officer is a 33-year-old male who received 704 hours of police academy training and a starting salary of $22,500. Police officers work an average of 24 hours of overtime per month, handle 8 calls in each 8-hour shift, and take part in 33.6 hours of inservice training annually. Nationally, 2.2 police officers serve each 1,000 residents. Wearing body armor is required for 12 percent of police officers, with 63 percent of the police agencies supplying the body armor.
