These 19 papers examine police corruption, drug abuse, abuse of authority, and other forms of police misconduct and examine issues and strategies involved in addressing police deviance.
Abstract
Individual papers present a typology of police deviance, basic elements of administrative guidance and control of police officer behavior, policy issues related to ethics and off-duty behavior, and peer group support for police occupational deviance. Additional papers examine the relationship between vice control and police corruption in the 1980's, police officer drug use, sexual misconduct by police officers, police lies and perjury, and deception by police. Further papers consider theoretical and practical aspects of the abuse of authority including the use of profanity and obscenity in formal contacts with citizens, prejudice and discrimination, police use of deadly force, and the killing of suspects. The final group of papers considers issues, philosophies, and procedures related to discipline, the handling of citizen complaints, and civil and criminal liability of police officers.
