Abstract
THE PURPOSE OF THIS MANUAL IS TO PREPARE POLICE DOGS AND HANDLERS FOR THE FUNCTIONS OF PATROLLING, TRACKING, SEARCHING, COLLECTING EVIDENCE, FINDING MISSING PERSONS, AND KEEPING THE PEACE. ALL PHASES OF POLICE DOG UTILIZATION ARE COVERED FROM PUPPYHOOD TO HEALTH TO BREEDING. THE VOCAL COMMAND SECTION IS ORGANIZED BY THE PRECISE WORDS OF COMMAND. SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS ARE GIVEN CONCERNING THE TRAINER'S DEMEANOR AND THE DOG'S BEHAVIOR. THIS MANUAL ALSO ACQUAINTS THE READER WITH THE PHYSIOLOGICAL AND MENTAL PROCESSES USED BY THE DOG IN THE ACTS OF TRACKING BY SCENT AND SEARCHING. APPENDED MATERIAL INCLUDES A SECTION ON LARGE SCALE ORGANIZED SEARCHES AND A SAMPLE TESTING AND RATING SYSTEM FOR DOGS.
