This report on the duties and organization of the Finnish police discusses the maintenance and order of public safety, the basis for the authority of the police, the emphasis on prevention of crime, the special status of the Helsinki police department, the role of advisory boards as a link between the public and the police, and the operations of the units of the Central Criminal Police, the Security Police, and the Mobile Police.
Abstract
Maintenance of order and safety is the most important service provided by the Finish police. The Police Act provides the basis for the authority of the police. Finnish police have evolved into a modern and efficient force. Organized into national, provincial, and local levels, there are separate police units subordinate to the Ministry of the Interior. The Finnish Police Department is responsible for uniformed police and criminal police work, traffic control and safety, international affairs, planning, financial and personnel administration, license administration, police material, and data administration and information activities.
