Abstract
A report by the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics has monitored the rise of black juvenile gangs in the State. This increase in activity can be attributed in part to the migration of members of the Bloods and Crips gangs, centered in Los Angeles. These gangs' influence, lifestyle, use of violence, and involvement in trafficking cocaine has spread to mid-sized Oklahoma towns with black communities. School officials in Florida and California have taken steps to tighten security at athletic events following violent incidents perpetrated by rival gangs. In an attempt to curb violence associated with juvenile gangs, the city of El Paso, Texas, has instituted a curfew for youths under the age of 19. Finally, the National Gang Suppression and Intervention Program has been developing gang intervention models and technical assistance materials, which focus on involving police, court personnel, schools, and community-based youth agencies in combatting the growth of juvenile gangs.
