PRINCIPLES OF ORGANIZATION ARE REVIEWED PARTICULARLY FOR THE SMALLER POLICE DEPARTMENTS OF 50 TO 75 OFFICERS.
Abstract
PRINCIPLES OF ORGANIZATION ARE PRESENTED-THE GENERAL FEATURES OF ORGANIZATION IN THE POLICE FIELD AT THE NATIONAL, STATE AND LOCAL LEVELS, FOLLOWED BY THE ORGANIZATION OF THE SMALLER DEPARTMENT. THE STAFF AND LINE CONCEPT, DELEGATION OF POWER AND RESPONSIBILITY, SUPERVISORY AND COMMAND FUNCTIONS, LAW OF THE SPAN OF CONTROL, UNITY OF COMMAND AND THE PURPOSES SERVED BY INSPECTION ARE GIVEN SIGNIFICANT ATTENTION. ALSO CONSIDERED ARE THE POLICE RESERVE FORCE, THE TACTICAL UNIT AND THE ROLE OF DEPARTMENTAL RULES AND REGULATIONS. ADMINISTRATIVE ALTERNATIVES TO THE CONVENTIONAL POLICE DEPARTMENT-THE METROPOLITAN POLICE AUTHORITY, THE FEDERATED POLICE SYSTEM, INTEGRATED POLICE AND FIRE SERVICES, AND CONTRACT LAW ENFORCEMENT-ARE CAREFULLY EXAMINED. IN ADDITION TO BEING A MANUAL AND SOURCE OF REFERENCE FOR THE DEPARTMENT AS A WHOLE, THIS TEXT CAN SERVE AS A TRAINING TOOL IN LOCAL DEPARTMENTAL TRAINING PROGRAMS AND IN REGIONAL POLICE TRAINING SCHOOLS.
