This book outlines a vision for policing in the Netherlands in the coming years.
Abstract
The main components of the vision of the Dutch police are outlined in 10 points: (1) the Dutch police want to contribute to safety; (2) reporting and giving advice is an integral task; (3) the Dutch police can contribute to safety as subordinates to the competent authority; (4) the Dutch police have a community focus; (5) the Dutch police will adopt a nodal orientation to community safety, which focuses on the interaction between the living environment and the flow of people, goods, money, and information; (6) the Dutch police are focused on policing communities, such as the business sector and social organizations, rather than on policing geographic units; (7) the Dutch police want to work in an information-driven manner; (8) the Dutch police consider program management to be a means of collaboration; (9) the Dutch police form an organizational entity; and (10) the Dutch police support the close collaboration between European police services. Chapter 1 discusses the growing demands on police in terms of rising crime rates and the threat of international terrorism and shows how public safety is emerging as one of the main concerns facing current day societies. Chapter 2 outlines the mission of the Dutch police, which is to ensure effective law enforcement and provide assistance, while chapter 3 focuses on the current issues facing the Dutch police, which include the politicization of safety, the fragmentation and privatization of police tasks, and unreasonable demands on police capacity to perform. Chapter 4 outlines the vision of the Dutch police, which includes a focus on collaboration and results, while chapter 5 presents the strategy of the Dutch police, focusing on its tasks, organization, and operations. Chapter 6 focuses on managerial factors and collaboration and chapter 7 outlines the organizational requirements for the police system. Figures, notes, bibliography
