Papers from police executive conferences held in 1968 are presented which deal with the changing nature of conflict; the papers are intended to help police leaders understand the changing role of the peacekeeper and to explore appropriate ways of coping with confrontation and disruption.
Abstract
A paper on police management-employee relations considers why employee organizations develop, types of employee groups, and the validity of the general position of law enforcement towards employee organizations. Another article discusses patterns of student protest, with special attention directed to demonstrations against racism. A transcript of a CBS news special on college turmoil is included which presents the views of several students representative of various viewpoints. Another paper deals with student unrest in high schools. The social bases of the student movement are examined. Other papers discuss ways to improve the working conditions of patrol officers; analyze various categories of student protesters, the generation gap, and the revolt of New York civil servants; and present data on municipal employee unionization. Tables are included.
