A COLLECTION OF ARTICLES DEALING WITH THE ROLES AND FUNCTIONS OF THE POLICE IN VARIOUS SOCIETIES THROUGHOUT THE PAST CENTURY.
Abstract
MOSSE BELIEVES THAT THESE ARTICLES INDICATE THAT THE POLICE ASSUME WIDELY DIFFERING ROLES, DEPENDING UPON THE VALUES, SOCIAL, AND POLITICAL STRUCTURE OF THEIR PARTICULAR SOCIETY. SEVERAL ARTICLES PORTRAY THE CHANGING ROLE OF THE GERMAN POLICE IN THE TRANSITION FROM THE WEIMAR REPUBLIC TO THE NAZI STATE. ALSO PRESENTED ARE THE ROLES OF POLICE FORCES AT VARIOUS STAGES OF CANADIAN, FRENCH, BRITISH, RUSSIAN, AND AMERICAN HISTORY.
