A REPORT OF POLICE FOUNDATION ACTIVITIES SINCE 1970, INCLUDING SPONSORSHIP OF NATIONAL CONFERENCES ON A VARIETY OF POLICE ISSUES AND FUNDING OF RESEARCH AND DEMONSTRATION PROJECTS TESTING NEW METHODS OF POLICING.
Abstract
THE POLICE FOUNDATION IS A PRIVATELY FUNDED ORGANIZATION ESTABLISHED IN 1970 WITH A 30 MILLION DOLLAR ALLOCATION FROM THE FORD FOUNDATION. ITS PURPOSE IS TO SUPPORT INNOVATION AND IMPROVEMENT IN POLICING. GENERAL ACTIVITIES SUCH AS NATIONAL CONFERENCES ON WOMEN IN POLICING AND POLICE LABOR RELATIONS, WORK WITH OTHER ORGANIZATIONS SUCH AS THE INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF CHIEFS OF POLICE OR THE FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION, AND FUNDING OF PROJECTS ARE DESCRIBED. TWO MAJOR PROJECTS ON POLICEWOMEN AND ON ROUTINE PREVENTIVE PATROL ARE OUTLINED. ALSO, PROJECTS FUNDED BY THE FOUNDATION, INVESTIGATING SUCH AREAS AS TEAM POLICING, PAROLE STRATEGIES, PERSONNEL, LABOR RELATIONS, POLICIES, CITIZEN CONFLICTS, ALTERNATIVES TO ARREST, CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION AND POLICE LEADERSHIP ARE EXAMINED. A SUMMARY OF GRANTS AND PROJECTS, AND A LIST OF PUBLICATIONS ARE ALSO PROVIDED.
