THIS CONFERENCE ATTEMPTS TO REDEFINE THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN THE POLICE AND SOCIETY BY TAKING INTO CONSIDERATION HOW THEY AFFECT THE POLICE ROLE AND THE POLICE ATTITUDE.
Abstract
THE CONFEREES AGREED THAT THE ROLE OF THE POLICEMAN IS LAW ENFORCEMENT - A CONCEPT WHICH INCLUDES PREVENTION OF CRIME, PROTECTION OF PERSONS AND PROPERTY, AND ENFORCEMENT OF LAWS. THEY FELT THAT PREVENTION OF CRIME COULD BEST BE ACHIEVED THROUGH A BETTER AWARENESS OF COMMUNITY NEEDS AND EXPECTATIONS AND INCREASED INTERACTION WITH ALL SEGMENTS OF SOCIETY. THERE WAS A GENERAL AGREEMENT THAT POLICE INVOLVEMENT IN SOCIAL PROBLEMS SHOULD BE RESTRICTED TO IMMEDIATE PROBLEM RESOLUTION, DISENGAGEMENT AS SOON AS PRACTICAL, AND REFERRAL TO THE APPROPRIATE SOCIAL AGENCY FOR FOLLOW-UP ACTION. FOR RELATED CONFERENCE REPORTS, REFER TO NCJ-14249 AND 14250. --IN ENGLISH AND FRENCH
