THE OBJECTIVES FOR AND THE LEVEL OF DEVELOPMENT OF THE WEST GERMAN COMPUTERIZED POLICE INFORMATION SYSTEM ARE OUTLINED.
Abstract
THE INFORMATION SYSTEM IS DESIGNED TO PROVIDE CURRENT, COMPLETE INFORMATION FOR POLICE INVESTIGATIONS AND RESEARCH TO THE FEDERAL AND STATE CRIMINAL AGENCIES, STATE POLICE OFFICERS, THE BORDER PATROL, AND CUSTOMS OFFICERS. INFORMATION MODIFICATION AND RELEASE ARE CONTROLLED BY SPECIAL LAWS. THE ASSOCIATION OF STATE AND FEDERAL AGENCIES, WITH A CENTRAL OFFICE AT THE FEDERAL CRIMINAL AGENCY, PERMITS INFORMATION EXCHANGE AND STANDARDIZATION OF DATA PROCEDURES. THE DEFINITION OF FUNCTIONS AND PLANNING ARE THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE STANDING COMMITTEE OF THE INTERIOR MINISTER AND SENATORS OF THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT AND STATES. INFORMATION AREAS COVERED BY THE SYSTEM INCLUDE AN INDEX OF INDIVIDUAL PEOPLE, A LIST OF PERSONS AND OBJECTS SOUGHT, AN ARREST CATALOGUE, A CRIME AND CRIMINAL CATALOGUE, DACTYLOSCOPIC DATA, LOST-AND-FOUND INFORMATION, CRIMINOLOGICAL LITERATURE, AND DATA RELEVANT TO POLICE WORK FOUND IN OTHER INFORMATION SYSTEMS. DEVELOPMENT AREAS FOR THE IMMEDIATE FUTURE ARE CRIMINAL IDENTIFICATION TECHNIQUES (HANDWRITING AND VOICE RECOGNITION) AND COMPUTER TECHNIQUES (PICTURE INFORMATION PROCESSING). HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE EQUIPMENT AVAILABLE TO THE SYSTEM ARE DESCRIBED. EXTENSIVE ILLUSTRATIONS, A GLOSSARY, TABLES, AND A BRIEF BIBLIOGRAPHY ARE FURNISHED. --IN GERMAN. (KMD)
