POLICE JUVENILE OFFICERS ARE DEFENDED AGAINST RECENT CRITICISM, AND THEIR CERTIFICATION IS SUGGESTED.
Abstract
A DIRECTOR OF THE INTERNATIONAL JUVENILE OFFICERS ASSOCIATION AND A FORMER PRESIDENT OF THE CALIFORNIA STATE JUVENILE OFFICERS ASSOCIATION ARGUE THAT SPECIALLY TRAINED JUVENILE OFFICERS ARE MOST EFFECTIVE IN DEALING WITH JUVENILE OFFENDERS. LAWS REQUIRING THE CERTIFICATION OF POLICE JUVENILE OFFICERS COULD SET SELECTION AND TRAINING GUIDELINES AND ASSURE THAT ONLY QUALIFIED OFFICERS ARE ASSIGNED TO CASES INVOLVING JUVENILES. FURTHERMORE, RECENT ATTEMPTS TO RESTRICT THE RECORD-KEEPING ACTIVITIES OF JUVENILE OFFICERS ARE CRITICIZED BECAUSE ADEQUATE BACKGROUND INFORMATION IS IMPORTANT FOR EFFECTIVE DECISION MAKING. THE AUDIOTAPE CASSETTE IS SUITABLE FOR GENERAL AUDIENCES. A TABLE OF CONTENTS IS INCLUDED, BUT NO FURTHER SUPPORTING MATERIALS ARE PROVIDED.
