Guidelines are presented for the development of organizational and technical skills in police management.
Abstract
Motivation is examined in a self-directed work environment together with organizational factors that influence motivation in Canada police departments. Guidelines are given for the organization and operation of an effective performance evaluation system covering feedback, reinforcement, and constructive discipline. Several important aspects of work assignment are discussed, particularly decisions about what should be done and who should do it. The effect of the organizational hierarchy and work roles are examined from the perspective of the supervisor subordinate relationship and organizational efficacy. Implications of human resources management decision are examined in relation to the public at large. Also covered are assessment of training needs of the operational officers and junior staff as well as the development of a managerial career.
