This report presents statewide management data on South Dakota police departments.
Abstract
A self-report survey was completed by 80 of the 100 current police departments across South Dakota. The financial information obtained indicated that the total income available to responding agencies ranged from $28,950 per year to $19,125,534 per year. During 2003, the departments had a combined budget of $54,500,930. The 75 full-time responding police departments reported a total of 728 full-time, sworn personnel; 22 percent of whom have worked in their current department between 5 to 9 years. A full 95 percent of the 728 South Dakota officers are male while only 5 percent are female. Data are offered on personnel benefits, including educational benefits, insurance, vacation, sick leave, holidays, and overtime. The 75 full-time agencies answering the survey reported owning a total of 487 police vehicles, 46 percent of which were marked police cars. Forty-five percent of these 75 responding agencies reported they had no schedule or policy for replacing police vehicles. Data are also offered on police weapon policies, the use of specialized equipment, police dogs, and computers. Turnover rates indicated that a full 56 percent of responding agencies had no full-time officers leave their employment during 2002. Tables, exhibits
