This report from the South Dakota Criminal Statistical Analysis Center presents the results of a survey of statewide management data of all police department in the State.
Abstract
Management data was obtained from 74 of the 80 police departments in South Dakota (not including tribal agencies). Findings from the survey are presented for the following categories: general description of departments, budget, per capita cost of law enforcement, department size, demographics on sworn personnel, information on personnel benefits, collective bargaining, vehicles, specialized equipment, weapons, community policing, police dogs (K-9), computers, turnover, training, policies, and police department information presented according to the size of the populations they serve. Highlights from the survey include the following: 14 departments were the only entity housed within their buildings while 57 were housed with other agencies; agency budgets ranged from $33,050 per year to $26,784,198 per year; 71 departments reported 800 full-time sworn personnel, with an average of 16.5 officers for every 10,000 people in the State; 55 percent of full-time sworn personnel were patrol officers with an average salary of just over $44,000; and 24 percent of officers had worked in their department from 5-9 years, while 15 percent had worked in their current department 10-14 years.
