Abstract
Following a discussion of the history and philosophy of police management, a chapter suggests how to translate policing philosophy (values and beliefs) into desired outcomes. Chapters on the behavioral aspects of police management focus on leadership behavioral styles, organizational culture, management communication behavior, organizational environment, transactional analysis, and understanding personnel through the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). The latter is an instrument that reveals a person's personal traits and makes it possible to compare differences in fundamental approaches among individuals. Chapters on the functional aspects of police management discuss management planning, problem identification and decisionmaking, management by objectives, productivity, fiscal management, and time management. In discussing major issues in modern police management, a series of chapters address the use of power, civil liability, labor management, ethics for the 1990's, and the assessment center process. The new chapters in this edition discuss the translation of philosophy to outcome, organizational culture, productivity, and ethics for the 1990's. Other chapters have been updated with the latest theories, practices, and data. Chapter notes, discussion questions, and a subject index
