The Northern Division of the Northumbria Police Authority in England received reports of 14,629 crimes during 1988 and increased its overall detection rate from 43.15 percent in 1987 to 43.81 percent in 1988.
Abstract
Criminals traveling from outside the area are known to be responsible for a large proportion of offenses. However, reported crime dropped from the previous year. All subdivisions have taken the initial steps to establish a multi-agency approach to crime prevention, and 31.7 percent of all households are now covered by Neighborhood Watch. Although crime rates are low, particular areas of concern to the public are burglary, violent crime and assaults, vandalism, late-night disorders, excessive speeding, and dangerous driving. In December officers from throughout Northumbria were involved in the extended search to recover debris from the crash of a Pan-Am airliner at Lockerbie. Photographs and additional statistics.
