PRESENTATION OF DATA COLLECTED FROM 80 METROPOLITAN AREAS ACROSS THE UNITED STATES CONCERNING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE MULTIPLICITY AND/OR FRAGMENTATION OF METROPOLITAN POLICE AGENCIES AND POLICE PERFORMANCE.
Abstract
THIS DOCUMENT CONTAINS PRELIMINARY ANALYSES OF DATA COLLECTED ON POLICE INDUSTRY STRUCTURE AND PATROL ACTIVITY LEVELS IN METROPOLITAN AREAS. MULTIPLE REGRESSION ANALYSES WERE CONDUCTED TO DETERMINE THE RELATIONSHIPS AMONG METROPOLITAN POLICE INDUSTRY STRUCTURES, METROPOLITAN POLICE PATROL DEPLOYMENT, AND METROPOLITAN POLICE PATROL DENSITY. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT RESTRUCTURING POLICE SERVICE DELIVERY ALONG THE LINES RECOMMENDED BY NATIONAL STUDY COMMISSIONS MIGHT WELL LEAD TO LOWER LEVELS OF POLICE PERFORMANCE FOR THE MANY FUNCTIONS CARRIED OUT BY THE PATROL FORCE.
