THIS DOCTORAL STUDY EXAMINES THE THEORY THAT THE EDUCATION AND TRAINING LEVEL OF POLICE OFFICERS IS A MAJOR DETERMINANT OF THEIR PERFORMANCE.
Abstract
BASED ON THIS THEORY, UNDER THE BANNER OF 'POLICE PROFESSIONALISM,' REFORMS CALLING FOR HIGHER LEVELS OF TRAINING AND EDUCATION HAVE BEEN PROPOSED AND ACCEPTED AS PUBLIC POLICIES IN MANY CITIES, COUNTIES, AND STATES ACROSS THE COUNTRY. THE FOCUS OF THIS STUDY IS AN EXAMINATION OF POLICIES OF POLICE PROFESSIONALISM IN THE ST. LOUIS METROPOLITAN AREA. THE CONCEPT OF PROFESSIONAL POLICE IN A DEMOCRATIC SOCIETY, AN EMPIRICAL ANALYSIS OF THE ST. LOUIS POLICE DEPARTMENT'S PROFESSIONALISM, AN ANALYSIS OF THE CORRELATION BETWEEN POLICE PROFESSIONALISM AND PERFORMANCE, THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN POLICE ATTITUDES AND PROFESSIONALISM, AND THE ROLE OF POLICE PERFORMANCE IN RELATION TO POLICE ATTITUDES ARE EXPLORED EXTENSIVELY.
