This codebook describes the variables and research methods used to gather a data set concerning gang homicides and non-gang homicides as well as other types of offenses in small jurisdictions in California.
Abstract
The data focus on violent gang offenses and offenders as well as on a comparison sample of non-gang offenses and offenders. The data were gathered from police investigation files during 1985. Two separate data files are available, one for participants and one for incidents. The incident file has 94 variables and covers 273 cases, while the participant file has 8 variables and covers 1,006 cases. The participant data include age, gender, race, and role of participants. The incident data include information regarding the setting, automobile involvement, property loss, as well as regarding clothing, tattooed, slang, and other indicators of gang membership.
