Abstract
In the first article, the chief of the Budapest police reflects on new demands on police force. The two following articles focus on Hungary's rapidly rising crime rate and urge crime prevention while the fourth article urges the prevention of infanticide. An interview with the director of Hungary's National Institute of Criminology highlights the institute's activities and the lack of funding. The sixth article advocates victims' rights and the compensation of crime victims; in the seventh article, the new Hungarian law regulating gambling and its influence on slot machines are explained. A comparison between the French and Hungarian police follows in the eighth article, while the ninth article reemphasizes the importance of crime prevention, which should start in childhood. The tenth article explains the tasks of the Hungarian water police in coping with increased boating traffic and water tourism. The following articles deal with such diverse topics as traffic accidents, the civil defense and catastrophes, two specific robbery and murder investigations, and the conduct of police officers in Northern Ireland. The concluding article investigates the biological causes of crime (e.g., chromosome problems and dysfunctions of the nervous system).
