Abstract
THE DES MOINES POLICE DEPARTMENT INITIATED A HIGH SCHOOL POLICE SCIENCE COURSE FOR THE PURPOSE OF IMPROVING PUBLIC ATTITUDES TOWARD POLICE WORK AND FOSTERING ATTEMPTS TO RECRUIT QUALIFIED PERSONNEL. THIS VOLUME REVIEWS THE DEVELOPMENTAL, IMPLEMENTATION AND EVALUATIVE STAGES OF THE PROGRAM. THE SELECTION OF INSTRUCTOR, TEXT, AND TEACHING SUPPLEMENTS ARE DISCUSSED AND THE COURSE OUTLINES AND REQUIREMENTS ARE PROVIDED IN ANNEX FORM. EVALUATION SHOWS THAT COURSE OBJECTIVES WERE ACCOMPLISHED IN DEVELOPING INTEREST AND UNDERSTANDING OF POLICE PROBLEMS AMONG STUDENTS. STUDENT INTEREST WAS DEMONSTRATED BY STUDENT PARTICIPATION IN POLICE ACADEMY CADET PROGRAMS.
