This report presents statistics on the numbers and types of police personnel in each jurisdiction in England and Wales as of March 31, 2001.

Abstract

The data came from the Great Britain Home Office. Results revealed that England and Wales had 125,519 police officers in fulltime equivalents on March 31, 2001, an increase of 1,349 or 1.1 percent compared to a year earlier. This was the largest annual increase since 1988-89. The total included 2,206 officers sent to the National Crime Squad, National Criminal Intelligence Service, central services, and interagency units. Agencies recruited 7,415 police officers during the last 12 months, 64 percent more than in the previous year. A total of 5,849 police officers left police agencies. Seventeen percent of police officers in England and Wales were female, including 8 percent of those at the rank of Assistant Chief Constable or Chief Constable. The number of policewomen increased 5 percent over the previous year. The police agencies had 2,975 minority officers, 2.4 percent of the total and an increase of 8 percent over the previous year.
