Abstract
THE ARTICLE DESCRIBES JOSEPH WAMBAUGH'S NEW BOOK IN WHICH TWO POLICEMEN ARE CAPTURED BY TWO HOODLUMS AND TAKEN TO AN ONION FIELD WHERE ONE IS SHOT. THE OTHER, WHO FACES A LIFE OF GUILT FOR WHAT HE MIGHT HAVE DONE TO SAVE HIS PARTNER'S LIFE, IS BROUGHT TO THE EDGE OF SUICIDE. ADDITIONAL ARTICLES PROVIDE A STATEMENT BY SEN. EDWARD M. KENNEDY ON THE USE AND ABUSE OF VALIUM, LIBRIUM, AND OTHER TRANQUILIZERS IN THE TREATMENT OF STRESS; THE GOALS OF A TRAINING PROGRAM FOR POLICE SPOUSES TO IMPROVE UNDERSTANDING AND COMMUNICATION; AND SOME THOUGHTS ON POLICE STRESS BY A POLICE SPOUSE. STRESSES OF IDENTITY ROLE CRISIS AND FAMILY ARE OUTLINED IN AN ARTICLE ON THE UNDERCOVER OPERATIVE, WHILE A DETECTIVE INSPECTOR WITH THE BRITISH SOUTH AFRICA POLICE DESCRIBES THE STRESSES OF LIVING WITH CONSTANT TERRORIST WARFARE. ADDITIONAL TOPICS INCLUDE THE ADMINISTRATIVE ASPECTS OF POLICE HEALTH MAINTENANCE, THE RELATIONSHIP OF THE VIETNAM SYNDROME TO POLICE OFFICERS AND THEIR WORK, AND AN ARTICLE ON THE BIBLICAL BASIS FOR CRISIS COUNSELING. ALSO DISCUSSED ARE THE STRESSES OF BEING A FEMALE POLICE OFFICER AND THE PROBLEMS OF CAREER ADJUSTMENT AND TRAINING FOR POLICEWOMEN.
