Abstract
POLICE OFFICERS AND ADMINISTRATORS, IN COPING WITH DISCIPLINE, COMMUNITY PRESSURES, THE LIFE AND DEATH NATURE OF THEIR DECISIONMAKING, AND THE THREAT OF PHYSICAL HARM MANIFEST SERIOUS STRESS PROBLEMS. THIS BIBLIOGRAPHY BRINGS TOGETHER MUCH OF THE LITERATURE FROM THE 1970'S ON THIS TOPIC OF POLICE STRESS AND IS ORGANIZED ALPHABETICALLY BY AUTHOR. IT CONTAINS THE FOLLOWING SECTIONS: A SELECTION OF INTRODUCTORY READINGS ON THE SOCIOLOGY OF POLICE WORK AND POLICE PERSONALITY AND BEHAVIOR; DOCUMENTS ON THE CAUSES AND SYMPTOMS OF POLICE STRESS AND HOW INDIVIDUALS AND ORGANIZATIONS COPE WITH IT; REFERENCES CONCERNING POLICE ALCOHOLISM AND POLICE SUICIDE RELATED TO STRESS; MATERIALS ON POLICE FAMILIES, MARITAL PROBLEMS, AND DIVORCE, AND PROGRAMS ON UNDERSTANDING THE POLICING PROFESSION AND COPING WITH ITS PROBLEMS.
