COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF EUROPEAN POLICE SYSTEMS, WITH EMPHASIS ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN POLICE ORGANIZATION AND TECHNIQUES, AND SPECIFIC CULTURES.
Abstract
TWO MAIN ISSUES ARE RAISED IN THIS STUDY - THE TYPE OF INTERNAL STRUCTURE AND JOB DESCRIPTION OF EACH SYSTEM WHICH TOGETHER DESCRIBE THE POLICE ORGANIZATION, AND PERSONNEL DEVELOPMENT IN THE AREAS OF RECRUITMENT, TRAINING AND PROMOTION. THE BOOK REVIEWS THE LITERATURE ON COMPARATIVE POLICE ORGANIZATIONS. A COMPREHENSIVE COMPARISON OF THE LIVERPOOL AND COPENHAGEN POLICE DEPARTMENTS FOLLOWS, DETAILING HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL ORIGINS, ORGANIZATIONAL ELEMENTS, COSTS, GOALS, AND MEANS USED TO ATTAIN THOSE GOALS. BRIEF OUTLINES CONSIDER THE POLITICAL AND LEGAL TRAITS AND ORGANIZATION OF POLICE SYSTEMS IN AUSTRIA, BELGIUM, FRANCE, WEST GERMANY, ITALY, THE NETHERLANDS, NORWAY, SPAIN, SWEDEN, AND SWITZERLAND. SELECTED READING LISTS ON POLICE ORGANIZATION AND CULTURAL INFLUENCES ARE PROVIDED FOR EACH SYSTEM DISSCUSSED.
