This text explains the police role and responsibilities in traffic control, with emphasis on the police role in accident reduction and selective enforcement, as well as innovations for addressing drinking drivers and new procedures to deal with the reality of highways, convenience, and the ideal speed for all drivers.
Abstract
The text is structured for use in a one-semester college course in police traffic control. Individual chapters provide an overview of street and highway safety, traffic law, issues related to drivers who are under the influence of alcohol or other drugs, and zero tolerance for driving under the influence. Additional chapters focus on tactics, speed management, police officer survival, police pursuits and roadblocks, traffic direction, and pedestrian and bicycling safety. Further chapters explain accident investigation procedures, the traffic accident report, issues related to the hit-and-run driver, and traffic engineering.
