Abstract
CHAPTERS DISCUSS THE PROBLEMS OF UNSAFE VEHICLES, ROADS AND DRIVERS; DESCRIBE INNOVATIVE POLICE ACTION IN DETECTING AND APPREHENDING DRUNKEN DRIVERS; EXAMINE THE POTENTIAL OF COMPUTERIZED TRAFFIC RECORDS FOR ACCIDENT PREVENTION; AND DEVELOP NEW STANDARDS FOR POLICE PROTECTION DURING ROUTINE STOPS OF TRAFFIC OFFENDERS AND IN ROADBLOCK OPERATIONS. CHARTS AND DIAGRAMS ILLUSTRATE INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIAL SUCH AS THE HOW-TO OF REPORTING COLLISIONS. FEDERAL AID TO STATEWIDE TRAFFIC ACCIDENT PREVENTION AND CONTROL UNITS IN SUPPORT OF LOCAL ENFORCEMENT PROGRAMS ARE COVERED. THE POLICE ROLE IN VEHICLE AND PEDESTRIAN TRAFFIC CONTROL IS DELINEATED. THE TEXT TAKES A PROBLEMSOLVING APPROACH SHOWING HOW POLICE ACTION CAN REDUCE THE TOLL OF DEATHS AND INJURIES ON PUBLIC ROADS. A TRAFFIC SAFETY SYSTEM IS DESCRIBED TO PREVENT ACCIDENTS BY 'PRECOLLISION' ACTION, TO LESSEN DAMAGES AND INJURIES IN THE COLLISION ITSELF, AND TO PROVIDE 'POSTCOLLISION' SERVICES WHICH WILL GUARD AGAINST DEATH FROM LACK OF ADEQUATE EMERGENCY SERVICES.
