After reviewing the role of engineering, law enforcement, and public education in traffic safety, this text examines police policies, procedures, and responsibilities in the area of traffic law enforcement and accident prevention.
Abstract
Regarding traffic unit organization and operation, the text considers personnel recruiting and selection, compensation, supervision, and enforcement programs. Traffic laws, defenses, and penalties then are highlighted. Traffic accident investigation policy and procedures are delineated, with special attention to evidence collection and means of estimating accident speeds. Traffic patrol responsibilities are outlined, with emphasis on alcohol countermeasures. A section on officer safety examines such issues as use of lethal force, pursuit driving, traffic stops, and arrest procedures. Finally, related issues are discussed, including automobile theft, hitchhiking, and motorist assistance. Index and chapter notes.
