Abstract
THE STUDENT STUDY GUIDE IS THE BASIC REFERENCE DOCUMENT FOR STUDENTS (PRIMARILY POLICE SERGEANTS) PARTICIPATING IN POLICE TRAFFIC SERVICES SUPERVISION COURSES SPONSORED BY THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION. THE GUIDE OPENS WITH INSTRUCTIONS ON THE ADDITION OF LOCALLY PREPARED MATERIALS TO THE GUIDE. THE OBJECTIVES AND SCOPE OF THE COURSE ARE DISCUSSED, STUDY HINTS ARE OFFERED, AND THE COURSE CURRICULUM IS OUTLINED. SEPARATE STUDY SHEETS ARE PRESENTED FOR LESSONS COVERING ORIENTATION AND GENERAL BACKGROUND, REVIEW OF POLICE TRAFFIC SERVICES AND SELECTIVE TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT PROCEDURES, ROLE OF THE SUPERVISOR IN POLICE TRAFFIC SAFETY, POLICE ORGANIZATION AND MANAGEMENT, DIRECTION AND CONTROL OF TRAFFIC SERVICES, THE SERGEANT'S ROLE IN TRAINING, PERFORMANCE EVALUATION, AND COMMUNICATIONS. EACH STUDY SHEET NOTES TRAINING OBJECTIVES, LESSON CONTENT, AND STUDY SUGGESTIONS. REFERENCES TO BE CONSULTED BY STUDENTS FOR DETAILED STUDY ARE LISTED. CASE STUDIES ACCOMPANY SOME OF THE LESSONS. A BIBLIOGRAPHY AND A LIST OF PUBLICATIONS OF THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION ARE INCLUDED. (LKM)
