This book discusses police use of deadly force and the national trend among police agencies toward establishing restraint in the use of firearms. In addition, there is support for the development of carefully defined written standards for the use of firearms and of stronger management to enforce them.
Abstract
The book's major points are covered in six chapters: (1) Analysis of Shooting Incidents; (2) Legal and Administrative Restraints on the Use of Deadly Force; (3) Department Review of Shootings and Discharges; (4) Impact of Personnel Practices on the Use of Deadly Force; (5) Training; and (6) Use of Firearms by Nonuniformed Police: Plainclothes and Off Duty. There are separate sections detailing policies or proposed policies with regard to the use of firearms by several States and cities. Appendixes, bibliography, tables, figures
