THROUGH A REVIEW OF THE USE AND TREATMENT OF FEMALE PATROL OFFICERS IN THREE CITIES - DAYTON, NEW YORK, AND SAN FRANCISCO - THIS ARTICLE HIGHLIGHTS THE PROBLEMS POLICEWOMEN FACE AND DISCUSSES THEIR JOB EFFECTIVENESS.
Abstract
THE AUTHOR FIRST OUTLINES THE CIVIL RIGHTS ACT WHICH LED TO THE INCREASES IN WOMEN ON PATROL AND DESCRIBES THE RESULTS OF A WASHINGTON, D.C. STUDY SHOWING THAT WOMEN PERFORMED AS EFFECTIVELY AS MEN ON PATROL. TYPICAL ACTIVITIES OF WOMEN ON PATROL ARE THEN EXAMINED IN THE THREE CITIES. AMONG THESE ARE PARTICIPATION IN FAMILY DISTURBANCE CALLS, TRAFFIC STOPS, AND FOOT PATROL. SUCH PROBLEMS AS RESISTANCE BY THE PUBLIC AND MALE POLICE OFFICERS, LACK OF TRAINING, DISCRIMINATORY PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS, AND LACK OF ACCEPTANCE IN COMMAND POSITIONS ARE ALSO DISCUSSED. THE ARTICLE INCLUDES EXERPTS OF DISCUSSIONS AND INTERVIEWS WITH POLICEWOMEN AND MALE POLICE ADMINISTRATORS.
